TIME/SPACE is an interactive light work comprised of two pieces based on Isaac Newton’s Third Law of Motion. It abstracts the concepts of space and time and applies them as a material with which guests can play. “Space” is a defined platform hosting a grid of reactive lighting elements. The elements sense and respond to participants’ movements through vibrations, play back previous sequences of motion, and create new compositions based on visitor behavior. “Time” is a monolithic sculpture surrounded by a halo of point source lights. At its core, it ties back to the tradition of the sun dial which marks the passage of time with shadow. Using a predetermined set of rules, “Time” is an undulating landscape of shadow and light. These two forces are inextricably intertwined, and as such, movement data from “Space” is used to create the rules under which “Time” operates. And vice versa, the output of “Time” informs the visual makeup of “Space”. With the introduction of the participant as an actor in this system, a feedback loop is created that continually generates new results.
